My experience and commitment to my work are at the service of colleagues and clients, both through teaching and clinical collaboration, with the aim of contributing to the future of equine dentistry.

Who Am I?

I am José María, a licensed veterinarian specialized in veterinary and experimental dentistry and maxillofacial surgery from the Complutense University of Madrid. I graduated in veterinary medicine with the firm conviction to dedicate my career to the health and well-being of horses, and since then, I have progressively focused on deepening my knowledge of the equine dental system, an essential yet often overlooked area in veterinary practice.

My daily work in the field, treating real clinical cases, has allowed me to develop a practical and solution-oriented perspective on equine dentistry. Over the years, I have complemented my experience with specialized training and scientific publications, and I’ve had the opportunity to mentor colleagues and students who share this same passion.

My main areas of work include clinical dentistry, maxillofacial surgery, and teaching applied to real-life situations. I firmly believe in practical, honest, and approachable training, and in sharing what I’ve learned so that others can move forward with confidence and clinical judgment.

Equine Dentistry

Odontoplasty is not just simple rasping—dental balance is the foundation of good biomechanics, which requires knowledge, experience, and the right equipment. THE KEY LIES IN UNDERSTANDING THE BIOMECHANICS OF THE HORSE’S HEAD!

Maxillofacial Surgery

Conditions such as dental fractures, secondary sinusitis, dental cysts, tumors, and malformations often require a multidisciplinary approach in veterinary hospitals.
THE KEY IS AN ACCURATE DIAGNOSIS!

Prevention and care

Regular oral check-ups improve the horse’s comfort, feeding, and performance.
THE KEY IS EARLY DETECTION!

Teaching and outreach

I love sharing knowledge through courses in Spain and abroad, training veterinarians, riders, and horse owners. I also take part in talks, webinars, and publish articles on equine dentistry. THE KEY IS SHARING!

FAQ

Some symptoms include weight loss, poor coat condition, discomfort while eating or with the bit, discharge through fistulas, nostrils and/or persistent wounds, and behavioral changes. When in doubt, an oral examination can help determine the issue. Preventive check-ups are the key.

Yes, sedation administered by a veterinary professional is a safe and reliable protocol. It allows for a complete evaluation without risk or stress for the horse, while ensuring safety for both the animal and the practitioner.

It depends on the individual—every horse is different! The frequency of dental check-ups and treatments will vary based on age and dental condition. As a general guideline (though not a strict rule), horses should be examined at least once a year.

Odontoplasties (dental floating) and simple extractions are performed at the horse’s own location. However, cases that require advanced techniques or special diagnostic and treatment conditions must be handled in hospital facilities.
